Four hours later, Mallory stepped into the containment area of the Hard Line offices, which was below ground. The series of cells were all designed to contain various types of supernatural beings. There was a small front desk area where two guards were stationed. Four other guards manned the booking and main containment areas.

Mallory flashed his pass to the guards at the desk and was buzzed through. He took a short flight of stairs further down below the ground to the booking area.

“Creed.” The female seated behind the desk greeted. “Windstorm told me you were coming. Tomas is in tank three.”

He nodded. “Thank you, Tally.”

“Windstorm said not to kill him,” she warned.

He gave her a flat stare. He had no intentions of killing Tomas. His main intentions were merely to ascertain who the man was working for. With the moles from Rafe’s enemies, Batten and Blade, two covens that had once been bad-assed beyond compare, not all identified, it was important to know if he was working for one of those groups or Red Wolf.

Mallory stepped into the cell area. The mid-size rooms were windowless and contained a small cot, a single chair, and square table outside the cell. The rooms were designed for torture as well as containing. He pulled the door of tank three open and stepped into the room. The lights were soft and fell into every corner, preventing shadows from falling.

Tomas turned his head, and the dark-skinned Cuban gave him a cold-eyed stare. He remained seated on the cot in a show of defiance.

“You shouldn’t be surprised.”

He shrugged. “You and Windstorm aren’t the smartest tacks in the pack,” he said coldly.

“I guess you’re one of Evan’s.”

Tomas didn’t speak, and nothing in his expression gave anything away. “I’m not going to tell you anything,” he said, “about anything except to say you won’t succeed this time. You’re nowhere near as ruthless as Windstorm.”

Mallory shrugged broad shoulders. “Rafe can be a coldly ruthless son of a bitch.” And Tomas didn’t know the half of Rafe’s ferocity.

Tomas grunted and gave Mallory a suspicious stare when he unlocked the cell door then stepped back to grip the restraints that were secured in the ceiling.

“He had this place built for effectiveness.”

Tomas got to his feet and moved to the cell door, keeping his gaze on Mallory the whole time. That told Mallory Tomas wasn’t convinced Rafe was the only ruthless bastard within these walls. He was right to feel that way after the stunt he’d pulled.

“I don’t want to kill you, Tomas,” Mallory said, giving the restraints a tug. “I just want answers, such as why lie?”

Tomas studied him. “About what?”

“What was going on outside last night.”

He shrugged.

“I know there’s a hit on Magnus’s heirs, and I know they’ve narrowed it down to three,” Mallory said. “I just can’t figure who’s calling the shots though. Batten or Red Wolf.”

“Then why not just turn me over to the Witch’s Council?”

“I’m willing to do just that if I get the answers I’m looking for.
